Hannah also says, “No one knows for certain how much impact they have on the lives of other people. Oftentimes, we have no clue. Yet we push it just the same.” Discuss the concept of individual perception and how it contributes to how Hannah’s story plays out. What do you think she means by “pushing it”? Further on, Hannah says, “. . . I’m sure you must have thought, This can’t be why I’m on the tapes. It wasn't a big deal.” How did each of her thirteen reasons push her to her final decision? Do you think they would have each made different decisions about their actions if they had known how they were impacting Hannah’s life?
I think what Hannah meant by pushing it is when you don’t really know how much your actions are affecting people you just keep doing what you would normally do and the longer you do it, the more it hurts that person. I think the thirteen reasons pushed her to her edge because she always had the things that happened to her in the back of her head and she saw that these other people were doing the same things to others, for example, when Hannah figured out that Courtney was using her, Hannah watched Courtney do it to other people around her. I think that if Hannah would have told the people hurting her that they were hurting her they may have changed the way that they acted towards others. When most people (not all) figure out that they are hurting someone they stop, but for others it's just motivation to keep going, when Hannah caught Tyler he stopped not because he wanted to but because he knew that he had been caught. If the thirteen people on the list would’ve know that they were hurting/ affecting Hannah, some would’ve stopped, some (like Courtney) would’ve lied their way through it but if Clay would’ve know that he was hurting Hannah he would’ve stopped because he cared about Hannah. Hannahs overall decision may have changed if a person on the list would have actually cared for her... She may have actually felt that she was wanted and accepted, she may still be here if she felt accepted and wanted and was treated right.
do you think that at any particular parts of the novel hannah can be seen as a bystander since people were bystanders to what she went through?
